So as anyone who knows me at all knows that I love animals and I love working with them. But the other day I was really reminded of why I do what I do for them.
On Thursday, our shelter’s humane officer brought in two puppies from a house. They are little pitbull/shepard mixes and they are adorable. There were four pups altogether but he only brought the two that were in the worst condition. The two he brought had lived in a cat crate for their entire life. The other two were just tied to a chain outside. The ones tied out were over double the size of the ones in the crate. Being pit/shepard mixes, they should have been pretty big at 6 months old. Being in such a confined space, their growth will be stunted forever.
So they came in, and the first thing my sister and I did was give them a bath. They had lived in their own filth for 6 months, so they stunk pretty bad. And then we took them out in the warm sun to dry off. For the first time in their whole lives, these two little puppies were able to stretch their legs. They had never once played together or got to run with eachother. They just looked at us with these wide, confused eyes at first. They didn’t know how to play. And then we gave them a squeaky ball and they could finally be puppies. Then we took them inside and gave them a good meal, because they were very skinny and probably never had a meal like that. And after they ate, they played some more with the many toys we had given them. And then the two little puppies took a nap, each with a stuffed animal under their chin. And my sister and I looked at eachother and smiled. Because we knew that we made a difference in their lives and tought them how to be puppies again. That’s why we do what we do. That’s why we put up with all of the crazy things that we see every day. Because if I can help two little mistreated puppies be happy, then my job is done. And we both know that this is where we belong and that this is what we will be doing for the rest of our lives.
